History in the making - Dumfries hosts LGBT Pride
21/08/2008

Dumfries and Galloway made history on 16th August 2008 by hosting its very own LGBT Pride.

The day was a huge success with over 600 people coming along to enjoy the festivities.

People were welcomed by Grace Cardozo, acting Director of Programmes at LGBT Youth Scotland, and Fergus McMillan acting Chief Executive of LGBT youth Scotland.

There was also excitement as Dumfries constabulary received a certificate for completing their LGBT Charter of Rights. Pamela Clocherty presented the award and hopes that this will encourage more people to sign up. If you would like more information about this look up www.lgbtyouth.org.uk/lgbtcharterofrights.htm

Michelle McManus got everyone in the mood for a great day with songs and chat, and she seemed to chase away the clouds.

Alongside local heroes and Michelle, Dumfries Pride was also delighted to welcome Rozalla - “Queen of Rave”, most famous for her massive 1990’s rave classic, ‘Everybody’s Free (To Feel Good)’.

“‘Everybody’s Free (To Feel Good)’ was the perfect anthem for the day. The event was indeed free - and everyone did indeed feel good.

It was only fitting that the final word came from one of Dumfries’ most famous sons.” Michael Hawthorne, LGBT Community Health Manager, LGBT Youth Scotland

Michael had only dreamed of there being a Pride in Dumfries, and was instrumental in making it happen, alongside the hard work of many volunteers and the local community.

Madonna

Dumfries Pride also took “some time to celebrate” Madonna’s 50th birthday, which was the same day as Pride itself. The Candy Shop, Pride’s Madonna themed space,  included music; installations; and special prizes for the best Madonna lookalike .

And more ...

Alongside the main stage acts and The Candy Shop, Dumfries Pride, also featured stalls and displays; kids area; youth space; beer tent; and ‘village fete’ activities.

Local Support

Dumfries Pride was  run by volunteers from throughout Dumfries & Galloway, supported by LGBT Youth Scotland and the OUTfront project. There was also a great deal of local support for the event:

I know the LGBT Youth have worked really hard to secure the first Pride event in Dumfries and Galloway, just as they’re working really hard giving much needed support to people in our community with a variety of circumstances.

Dumfries Pride promises to be a day for people of all ages from across the community to enjoy and remember. I hope it proves to be the first of many in years to come.” Russell Brown, MP (Dumfries & Galloway)
