Resources for schools

I’m Caitlin Wood, LGBT Youth Scotland’s Education Capacity Building Officer. Since September 2017 I have been working with the fabulous team here and have been in this role (dream gig) since April 2019. Prior to LGBTYS, I worked in Melbourne at PROJECT ROCKIT as the Head of Programs; running workshops tackling bullying, hate and prejudice with schools, pupils, teachers and communities across Australia. My passion is education and advocating for young people, so I am very excited to learn how we can best support you and your school community this year.

To kick off 2020, we want to support you with a brand new resource, designed all for secondary school pupils. This resource can also be used with teachers and other school staff – feel free to get creative! Download from the link below.

Every year, LGBT Youth Scotland co-ordinate and advertise community-run events to mark LGBT History Month. We design an overarching annual theme to help spark event ideas and conversations, and this year’s marks the 20th anniversary of the repeal of Section 28 (sometimes known as Clause 2A) in Scotland.

What Have We Learned? will reflect on the multi-generational impact of the legislation which silenced teachers, preventing them from talking about LGBT issues in schools, and left thousands of young people without the support they so badly needed. It’s an opportunity to celebrate the steps we have taken to undo the legacy of Section 28 and make some bold commitments for the future.

The repeal of Section 28 was a pivotal moment in LGBT activism, rallying a community to affect real legislative change through a multitude of campaigning means. We think it’s vital young people are given the opportunity to understand the social history of activism, and so we have created an assembly and lesson, with an accompanying activity, that can be used in your school.
